June 2010

A front page article in our local paper on June 1 spoke volumes about the on going work that must be done to improve our higher education system.  “Virginia Students Facing More Tuition Increases” the headline read.  We should add “parents” to that statement.   For years, the issues of accessibility and affordability of higher education have been a major focus of my legislative efforts.

Accordingly, I am quite pleased that Governor McDonnell has appointed me to the newly created Commission on Higher Education Reform, Innovation and Investment.  The opportunity to serve on the commission will allow me to continue to work on ensuring that our young people have the best of opportunities for an affordable, quality education following high school.  While the much publicized General Assembly meets in a full, Regular Session for only a matter of weeks in the winter, its work goes on year around with numerous studies, committee meetings and commissions. The Commission on Higher Education Reform, Innovation and Investment is just one of my many legislative responsibilities I work on outside of Session.  In June alone there are dozens of meetings on the schedule.

Through this website I will seek to keep you informed. Another enjoyable aspect of serving as a State Senator is to be invited to speak with groups in our community.  On Memorial Day, I was honored by American Legion Post 215 to serve as the speaker at their Memorial Day program on the grounds of the Goochland Courthouse.  It was a moving experience to see so many in attendance and to share the day with my fellow Veterans and their families.  As part of my message on that day, I used the words Red Skelton shared with America in 1969.

I invite you to also hear those words from Red Skelton.  It is a powerful message about why America is truly the “Land of the Free and Home of the Brave.”

STAY INFORMED!
